When It Doesn't Matter That It's Slop (Paul Lessard)
Paul Lessard on where AI has already replaced people. Translation was a white-collar job that has essentially disappeared, and whether these systems replace people or simply de-skill them hardly matters to the companies using them. Wherever getting it exactly right, or meeting a refined sense of what is good, doesn't matter, it has already happened: when it doesn't matter that it's slop, it's going to be slop. There may be no formal line between where slop is acceptable and where it isn't. That boundary, he argues, is cultural and aesthetic, and that makes it a question of politics.
